Soon-to-be-released book, “Payroll Like a Boss,” co-authored by John Bernatovicz and Tammy Gillenwater, CPP, is a guide to strategic payroll, built from real experience in the field for people who want to do payroll better, not just get through it.
According to a LinkedIn post teasing the book’s upcoming April 28 release, the book is meant for payroll professionals ready to lead, influence, and elevate the function beyond transactions, and celebrates the professionals who make payroll happen flawlessly, while challenging the outdated idea that payroll is “just processing.”
During the March 16 “SpeakEasy HR” podcast episode promoting the book, Gillenwater was asked what steps payroll professionals should take if they want more visibility and influence in their situation. “One of the biggest fundamentals in the book … is to be brave,” she said. “They [payroll professionals] tend to be very humble. People need to first understand the value that they bring to the organization … and to start using their voice. Find it and then use it.”
Bernatovicz brings the “Like a Boss” framework to the book while Gillenwater brings in the payroll expertise. The two principles Bernatovicz bases the “Like a Boss” framework on are ownership and love, where you should have ownership in what you do, treat it like it’s your own business, and love what you do.
But Gillenwater says there’s a lot more to the book than just that. “Along with that, we have a lot of fundamentals, and I think a lot of people will be surprised,” she said on the podcast. “We have kindness in there, bravery, networking, attention to detail. That’s just a couple of examples of what we share in this book.”
